Understanding JWT
JSON Web Tokens (JWT) are widely used for authentication in modern web applications. However, improper implementation can lead to serious security vulnerabilities. This guide explores common JWT vulnerabilities and how to exploit them.
Algorithm Confusion Attack
One of the most critical JWT vulnerabilities is the algorithm confusion attack, where an attacker changes the algorithm from RS256 (asymmetric) to HS256 (symmetric):
// Original JWT header (RS256)
{
"alg": "RS256",
"typ": "JWT"
}
// Modified header (HS256)
{
"alg": "HS256",
"typ": "JWT"
}None Algorithm Attack
Some JWT libraries accept tokens with the algorithm set to "none", effectively removing signature verification:
{
"alg": "none",
"typ": "JWT"
}Weak Secret Keys
JWT tokens signed with weak secrets can be cracked using tools like hashcat:
# Crack JWT secret using hashcat
hashcat -a 0 -m 16500 jwt.txt wordlist.txt
# Using john the ripper
john jwt.txt --wordlist=wordlist.txt --format=HMAC-SHA256Best Practices
To secure JWT implementation:
- Always validate the algorithm
- Use strong, randomly generated secrets
- Implement token expiration
- Use refresh tokens for long-lived sessions
- Store tokens securely (HttpOnly cookies)
- Implement token revocation mechanisms
